The Funeral 葬礼

The widow’s late husband had been a drunkard and a shiftless good-for-nothing but she managed to scrape up enough money for a nice funeral.

The preacher who read the funeral services hadn’t known the man and began to speak of the shining virtues of the deceased. It was when the preacher told what a model husband and fine, outstanding citizen the deceased was that the widow nudged her small son and said:

“Jimmy, go over and look at the corpse. We must have gotten into the wrong funeral services.”

译文：

一个寡妇已故的丈夫是个酒鬼，他一无是处，也无法自谋生路。但他妻子还是设法借钱，勉强凑集了足够的钱为他举行了一个体面的葬礼。

主持葬礼的牧师并不认识死者，于是他就开始大声歌颂死者的美德。当他说道死者是一个模范丈夫，是一个优秀的杰出的公民的时候，这个寡妇用手轻轻推了推儿子，说：

“吉米，过去看看尸体，我们一定是参加别人的葬礼了。”

注释：

The woman knew her husband,--a good-for-nothing, and she knew the preacher,---always piling empty praises on the dead, but this was too far off! She had to make sure that she was paying for the right corpse.
